Copenhagen could soon be just four hours away from Berlin under the European Commission’s ambitious new plan to expand high-speed rail connections across the continent. The initiative aims to link all European capitals by 2040, cutting travel times and reducing reliance on short-haul flights. Currently, the journey between the Danish and German capitals takes about seven hours. The proposed upgrade would not only strengthen Northern Europe’s transport corridor but also support the EU’s climate goals by encouraging rail over air travel. According to Transport Commissioner Apóstolos Tzitzikostas, completing Europe’s high-speed network will require €550 billion in investments but could generate long-term economic and environmental benefits worth nearly €200 billion. A final financing strategy is expected in 2026, with mixed funding from EU programs, member states, and the European Investment Bank.
