Skjálfandaflói bay is full of activity, as the whale watching season has begun: during this time of the year whales return from southern waters in search of food, and stay here until fall. They accumulate blubber (= fat), which is needed as a food reserve for the breeding season in southern waters. The whale watching season runs from April until October: peak of the season is over the months of June, July and August.
