The border guard is one of few army units in Norway not in possession of drones, therefore questions arise about the border patrols’ ability to detect illegals who are seeking a safe haven in Norway and Finland, from Russia. The Finnish Ministry of Interior’s ‘Border Guard Department’ confirms that drones are used for statutory tasks of the Border Guard, although their performance and user experiences data are not public information. On the contrary, despite sharing a 198-km border with Russia, Norway has no plans to enhance border security with fixed-wing drones for monitoring and tracking possible illegal crossers.
