Gregg Ryder, currently assistant coach for Danish side HB Køge, is moving to Iceland‘s giants KR Reykjavík at the end of the autumn season, where he has been appointed as the new head coach.
“Gregg has made a formidable effort at the club, where with great professionalism and a warm personality he has been well-liked by both players, coaches and the other staff at the club. […] In particular, Gregg’s work with the development and integration of our young players in the first team will be missed […]. We hope all the best for Gregg in Iceland,” says CEO of HB Køge Per Rud.
For the 35 years old, Newcastle born coach is a return as, before joining HB Køge in the summer of 2020, Ryder had worked with different Icelandic clubs for a total of eight years: first as assistant and reserve team coach for IBV Vestmannaeyjar, then as first team coach in Thróttur Reykjavík and Thór Akureyri.
“KR is the biggest club in Iceland, so the opportunity to become head coach again and even for a team that can fight for the title and a place in European football I feel I have to take. I owe a big thank you to Per Rud who gave me the opportunity here in HB Køge, because I have loved being here,” said Gregg Ryder.
KR Reykjavík is the most titled club in Icelandic football history, but the last Besta Deildin season saw the side ending only in sixth place
