In Sweden, roughly 1.5 out of 10 million people live in relative poverty: in ten years the number has increased by a quarter of a million. According to Statistics Norway, a household with an income lower than 60% of the average in Sweden lives with a low financial standard. From 2011 to 2021, the proportion of the population in relative poverty has increased by 1.2 percentage points; during the same period, the population has increased to approximately 10 million people: both the proportion and the number of people living in relative poverty have thus increased. In Sweden, poverty is described either as relative or absolute: relative poverty in Sweden is linked to household income per year. It is included if the household’s income is lower than 60 percent of the average in Sweden (calculated as the median). Absolute poverty means that one cannot afford to pay for necessary expenses.
