Denmark plans to expand the military draft to women and to extend service terms. According to the Social Democrats, the goals are to strengthen the army, and to pursue gender equality. Today, in Europe only Norway and Sweden already provide for it. Denmark is a member of NATO and currently has approximately 9,000 professional troops on top of the 4,700 conscripts undergoing basic training: the government wants to reach a total of 5,000 conscripts.
