
Baltic Sea. A Second undersea internet cable, linking Sweden and Lithuania, was severed in the Baltic Sea just 24 hours after and less than 100km away from the undersea cable linking Finland to Germany. It is deemed extremely unlikely that the events are not acts of sabotage. The damaged cable, run by Telia Lithuania company, handled about a third of Lithuania’s internet capacity and is yet to be repaired but traffic has already been restored.

A critical undersea internet cable, Lion1, linking Finland and Germany was severed on November 18 near the southern tip of Sweden’s Öland island, raising suspicions of external interference. The cable, which spans approximately 1,200 kilometers, is vital for digital connectivity between Northern and Central Europe. Finnish telecom operator Cinia confirmed the damage but has not yet determined the cause. Investigations are ongoing amid heightened concerns about potential Russian sabotage, especially given recent geopolitical tensions in the region. Repair efforts could take between five to fifteen days.
