With the passing of her third cousin Elizabeth II, Margaret II of Denmark is now the only reigning queen: the Danish ruler also became the European monarch with the longest current reign. On September the 11th, she celebrated the 50th anniversary of her accession to the throne with a series of discreet celebrations as a mark of respect after the death of the Queen of England. Margaret, 81, ascended the throne at the age of 31 (in January 1972) upon the death of her father, Frederick IX. She is the first woman to hold the position of reigning queen in the country.
